Notre Dame is currently preparing for their home opener against Mount Saint Mary’s.
NDMBB Defeats DePaul
Notre Dame kicked off the season right, taking down DePaul in their 72-58 victory. The Player of the game, T.J. Gibbs, led the team with 21 points. Along with Gibbs, Matt Farrell and Bonzie Colson, captains for ND MBB, also had good games. These three players will be essential in the Fighting Irish’s goal of reaching the Final Four this season.
Notre Dame’s 47.2 FG% topped DePaul’s 33.8% and played a key role in the Irish’s win. In order to defeat The Mount, Notre Dame will have to keep up their aggressive, defensive play, such as their high rebounding numbers. The Irish had a rather close game throughout the first half, but they prevailed and trampled over the Blue Demons the second half.
Mount Saint Mary’s Falls to Marquette
Mount Saint Mary’s (MSM) lost 80-59, even though Junior Robinson, a senior for The Mount, had 20 points and 6 assists. However, Mount Saint Mary’s team stats did not compare with Marquette’s. Robinson is on the Preseason All-NEC team, and he is a key player for the Mount.
Mount Saint Mary’s shot a 45.1 field goal percentage compared to Marquette’s 50.9%. Marquette out rebounded Mount Saint Mary’s 35-24 and had 11 turnovers, while MSM MBB had 16. Although Marquette and Mount Saint Mary’s both scored 32 points in the second half, the first half went to Marquette 48-27, leading to their win.
What Notre Dame Needs to Do to Win
Notre Dame was victorious in 2014 against MSM MBB 93-67. The Fighting Irish shot a 59%, which dominated over The Mount’s 36.8%. This game was strong for Notre Dame offensively and defensively, as they ousted MSM 40-26 in rebounding and in FT% 81.3% to 44.4%.
The Fighting Irish need to continue to run their offensive game smoothly, as well as their aggressive defense. If so, they should win their home season opener in a landslide against Mount Saint Mary’s MBB.
