Notre Dame Takes Down Mount Saint Mary’s in Home Opener

Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame Men's Basketball

Notre Dame Men’s Basketball (MBB) defeated Mount Saint Mary’s (MTSM) with a whopping 88-62 finish. Although close during parts of the first half, ND MBB went on a roll and kept with it. Notre Dame improves their record to 2-0 for the season.

Notre Dame Offense Lights Up

The Irish had an extremely strong offense today against Mount Saint Mary’s MBB. Notre Dame had a FG percentage of 52.4%, and MTSM shot a 39.3%. The Irish had an outstanding Free Throw Percentage as well, finishing with a 94.7%.

Overall, the Fighting Irish made 18 out of their 19 free throw attempts. Notre Dame only had five turnovers compared to MTSM’s 11.

Captain Bonzie Colson led the team in points with 27. He went 11 for 15 on the night, while Pflueger backed him up, scoring 14 points; 8 of them came from the free throw line.

The Notre Dame starting line-up of Colson, Farrell, Pflueger, Gibbs, and Geben scored 71 points, while the bench players added the other 17.

Notre Dame Dominates Defensive Game

ND MBB also out-played MTSM MBB on the defensive side, too. Notre Dame hit the boards hard, outrebounding MTSM 39-30. Notre Dame continuously shut down the MTSM MBB offense.

The lockdown defense is going to be key as Notre Dame progresses further into the season and faces opponents such as North Carolina and Duke.

Colson played well offensively, but he also stepped up on defense for Notre Dame. Colson had 11 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks – he led Notre Dame in all three of these categories, topping off his amazing and complete performance for the Irish. Colson’s game play will be essential for Notre Dame as they continue on with their schedule.

Next Up for Notre Dame

Notre Dame will face the Chicago State Cougars at home on Thursday. Chicago State is 0-2 so far on the season. Purdue crushed them in their last game 111-42, so Chicago State will be looking to rebound after their two losses so far this season.

The Fighting Irish have good momentum going into this game, though. If they keep up the aggressive effort on both sides of the court, Notre Dame Men’s Basketball should have an easy win for them coming on Thursday against Chicago State. Communication will be key for the Fighting Irish.
