Purdue Athletics Roundup: Week of 9/25

Jordan Louie | Purdue Exponent

We like to shed light on all the sports teams at Purdue University here on Indiana Sports Coverage. On this Saturday with no football, we will do just that. Let’s take a look at what the other Purdue athletic teams have been up to over the past few weeks. We will also look ahead and see what is upcoming for these various squads.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country

The Cross Country teams have started out extremely well to begin their season. In the two meets they have competed in, the women have won the team portion in both. The men have a second place finish and first place finish as a team as well. These results took place in the Crusader Open at Valparaiso University and the Indiana Intercollegiates in West Lafayette.

The men and women will look to continue this great running in the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, KY. That meet takes place today. Stay tuned to find out how the men and women do!

Men’s and Women’s Golf

The Men’s Golf team has an upcoming tournament in the Erin Hills Invitational. The tournament starts tomorrow in Hartford, Wisconsin. So far, the men have finished ninth in the Gopher Invitational and fourth in Northern Intercollegiate.

As for the women, they finished tied for third place at their only tournament so far this season. They finished 10 under par at the Minnesota Invitational at Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minnesota. Purdue starts their second tournament Monday at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Highland Park, Illinois.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Today the Purdue Men’s Tennis team will begin Pre-Qualifying for the ITA Men’s All-American Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Pre-Qualifying runs through tomorrow and the tournament itself goes until October 7th.

The women are currently playing in the Miami Ohio Invite in Oxford, Ohio. The tournament began yesterday and runs through tomorrow.

Women’s Soccer

Women’s soccer has started with blazing pace so far in 2017. Their current record stands at 8-2-1 with a 3-0-1 Big Ten mark. In the month of September, they went 5-1-1 with wins over Dayton, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, and Illinois. Their most recent win over the Illini put Purdue in a tie with Penn State and Northwestern atop the Big Ten standings.

The Boilermakers begin October with the Northwestern Wildcats tomorrow at 1 pm Eastern Time. The game can be seen on Big Ten Network Plus.

Volleyball has also off to an amazing start so far this season. Their 12-2 overall record has catapulted them to the number 19 spot in the top 25 rankings. Their biggest win so far was defeating number nine ranked Creighton at the Kansas Invitational on September 8th.

With wins over Northwestern and Indiana, Purdue’s Big Ten record sits at 2-1. The one loss coming against Ohio State on September 23rd. Their most recent victory, a 3-0 sweep of Indiana surely builds momentum going into their match against the Hoosiers tonight in Bloomington. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm Eastern Time.

Keep in mind that Purdue football kicks off at 2:30 pm Eastern Time next Saturday against Minnesota. That game can be seen nationally on ESPN2. Until then, enjoy the other Boilermaker teams and their success so far this Fall!
