Well, at least the game was tied after the first quarter.

Butler traveled to Illinois State yesterday for their season opener and there weren’t many positives to take away after losing the game 45-0. The Redbirds came into the game as the preseason #18 team in the FCS and definitely proved it on their home turf.

Butler struggled to find any offense all game, as they ended up with just 41 total yards. The rushing attack from Sam Schrader, Brad Sznajder, and Duvante Lane came up with exactly 0 yards on the ground with the longest run being 7 yards.

Quarterback Will Marty, making his first start since the Davidson game last year, continued the offensive struggles going 8 for 23, throwing for only 41 yards and giving up a pick 6 to safety Mitchell Brees.

Redbirds quarterback Jake Kolbe shredded through the Butler defense as he threw for 194 yards going 18 for 29 and 2 touchdowns.

Markel Smith led a rushing attack that racked up 320 yards the whole game, as Smith had 88 and 1 touchdown. Christian Gibbs led receivers with 2 touchdowns and 79 yards on 5 receptions.

Chad Burdo for the Bulldogs was able to recover a fumble for Butler as Illinois State only gave up one turnover all game.

Butler will take on in-state rival Franklin next Saturday for their second road game in a row to start off the season.
